چکیده

bstract. We propose a novel scanner characterization approach or applications requiring color measurement of hardcopy output in alibration, characterization, and diagnostics applications. The ethod is advantageous for common practical color printing sysems that use more than the minimum of three colorants necessary or subtractive color reproduction; printing with cyan (C), magenta M), yellow (Y), and black (K) is the most prevalent example we use n our description. The proposed method exploits the fact that for the cenarios in consideration, in addition to the scanner RGB values or a scanned patch, the CMYK control values used to print the atch are also available and can be exploited in characterization. An ndexed family of 3D scanner characterizations is created, each haracterization providing a mapping from scanner RGB to CIELAB or a fixed value of K, the latter constituting the index for the charcterization. Combined together, the family of 3D characterizations rovides a single 4D characterization that maps scanner RGB obained from scanning a patch and the K control value used for printng the patch to a colorimetric CIELAB measurement for the patch. A ignificant improvement in the robustness of the method to variaions in printing is obtained by modifying the K index to utilize the canned output for a black-only patch printed with the correspondng K value instead of directly utilizing the control K value used at he printer. Results show that the proposed 4D scanner characterzation technique can significantly outperform standard 3D aproaches in the target applications. © 2007 SPIE and IS&T. DOI: 10.1117/1.2803833

Novel scanner characterization method for color measurement and diagnostics applications

We propose a novel scanner characterization approach for applications requiring color measurement of hardcopy output in printer calibration, characterization, and diagnostic applications. It is assumed that a typical printed medium comprises the three basic colorants C, M, Y. The proposed method is particularly advantageous when additional colorants are used in the print (e.g. black (K)). A fam...

Color Characterization for Scanners: Dpi and Color Co- Ordinate Issues

Characterization and estimation of device independent color co-ordinates of scanned or photographic images of through empirical models is a typical issue for commercial desktop scanners and cameras. As a domain of complex problem for optimising suitable color model to evaluate textiles and paints, we investigated the effect of different DPI and device independent color coordinate selection for ...

Set theoretic estimation in color scanner characterization

A set theoretic approach for the spectral characterization of a color scanner is described. These devices usually employ three channels to obtain a device dependent RGB (red, green, blue) image. To display/print an image, the device dependent RGB values must be correctly transformed to the color space of the target device. To determine accurate and efficient transformations for a number of devi...

Spectral Estimation of Printed Colors Using a Scanner, Conventional Color Filters and applying backpropagation Neural Network

Reconstruction the spectral data of color samples using conventional color devices such as a digital camera or scanner is always of interest. Nowadays, multispectral imaging has introduced a feasible method to estimate the spectral reflectance of the images utilizing more than three-channel imaging. The goal of this study is to spectrally characterize a color scanner using a set of conventional...

Color scanner characterization with scan targets of different media types and printing mechanisms

Due to the increasing popularity and affordability of color imaging devices, color characterization for these devices becomes an important subject. In other words, a set of color profile(s) needs to be generated for each device to transform the device dependent color space to a device independent one. This paper will concentrate on color characterization of scanners. Up to now, most scanner cha...
